Gladius

I have a piece of 30 inch 1075 steel that I will practice large heat treatment with. It is about a 1/4 inch thick and about an 1 1/2 inch wide. I will try to forge a Decurio style gladius, I will use rosewood for the handle and perhaps some bone. I have also almost completed work on a simple hunting knife. the knife is special because the wood is local burl that I dug out of the ground myself, it has some beautiful bird's eyes.

Dear Reader

Dear Reader
In approximately 16 weeks i will put my skills as a bladesmith to the test as I attempt to reproduce a sword using all techniques at my disposal. This is not a perfect method for sword making, nor is it the only method. I will post tutorials that explain the key parts and construction of a sword as I understand them. I have been making knives for about a year and have been quite successful with heat treatment and hot forging. If you see a way I could improve my methods I would appreciate an email at orionandronicos@gmail.com. I have improvised a small forge out of a propane burner, kaowool and various refractory cements. I will post pictures and videos about all my forges and tools in time.
